Downshifting

Not all-or-nothing: move to a cheaper commune, work less, simplify. Lower costs bring independence closer and make today lighter.

What it is

Downshifting is a step towards independence, not the end: you lower your costs and your workload together. Lower spending needs a smaller pot; less work buys time now.

Who it suits

People who feel the pressure of high costs and long hours, families who want more time together, and anyone not ready to stop completely.

The Swiss angle

Communes differ in rent and tax rates, and some cantons tax wealth and lump sums much less than others. A move before large pension withdrawals can matter, but weigh tax against housing, schools and quality of life.

How to model it

Lower your monthly spending in the calculator to the new budget and adjust saving to your new income. Compare the result with your current plan using a share link for each. More on spending in you need less than you think and on housing in rent or buy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to leave Switzerland to downshift?

No. Rent, taxes and costs differ a lot between cantons and communes. Moving within Switzerland keeps your pensions, health insurance and network unchanged.

Does a lower salary hurt my pension?

It lowers future AHV and pension-fund credits somewhat. The lower spending usually matters more, but check both in the calculator.
