AHV when you stop early: how to avoid gaps in your pension
Stop working at 45 and your AHV pension can shrink for life. How contribution years work, what non-employed people pay and how to close the gap.
The AHV pension depends on your average income and on complete contribution years. Each missing year costs about 1/44 of it, for life.
With these numbers AHV pays about CHF 2’730 / month from 65, including the 13th pension spread over the year.
Estimate from the legal formula. Your exact pension depends on your account record, child-raising credits and splitting with a spouse.

Couples, child-raising credits and splitting are not included. More in AHV gap years in early retirement.
Ask your compensation office for your individual account statement (IK-Auszug). It is free and shows every year counted.
Contributions can usually be paid for the last five years only. Years spent abroad may count under a social security agreement.
From December 2026, everyone receiving an AHV old-age pension gets an extra monthly payment once a year. The tool spreads it over the year.
