Can I retire at 60?

Five years before the AHV age is the most common early-retirement wish. With a solid pension fund it is often closer than it feels.

Fifty, CHF 150’000 invested, CHF 300’000 in the pension fund, and CHF 6’000 a month of spending. Many people in this position assume they must work to 65. The pension fund and 3a can usually be drawn from 60, which shortens the bridge.

What the numbers say

From 58.5 you live on accessible savings for about 6.5 years, until pension-fund money, Pillar 3a and AHV have all started at 65.0. That stretch is the hard part of early retirement in Switzerland.

After that, AHV of about CHF 2’730 a month plus a pension-fund pension of CHF 2’075 covers 80% of spending of CHF 6’000 a month; savings pay the rest.

On the default return, savings would still be about CHF 797’719 at 95 in today’s francs. A bad first decade in the markets can cut that sharply, which is why the plan uses a withdrawal rate with a margin.
